Houston is an amazing place to live. But you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy everything the city has to offer! Whether you were born and raised here or you’re new in town, here are five free things to do around Houston.
Houston Arboretum and Nature Center
The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is open 365 days a year from 7am until 7pm. Although admission is free, there are several special programs and events throughout the year that require the purchase of a ticket. One way to save on these events is to become a member, which helps with the upkeep of the facilities and programs. While you are there, explore Memorial Park next door.
Discovery Green in the heart of downtown Houston is a 12-acre green space with fountains, playgrounds, lakes, and restaurants. The site hosts festivals, flea markets, concerts, and more throughout the year.
Miller Outdoor Theatre
Get ready for a new season at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. Several days a week between March and November, there are events scheduled at Miller Outdoor Theatre located inside Hermann Park. From ballet performances to concerts to Shakespeare, there is plenty of entertainment and it’s all free. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch, but make sure you don’t bring glass containers.
Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
There are always interesting exhibits at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. And sometimes there are even special events like yoga, writing workshops, and trivia competitions. On Saturdays from 1-4 pm, you can take a tour with the FAQ team.
Explore the hiking and biking trails, as well as the waterway at Buffalo Bayou. The cistern is a hidden gem, and although tours are usually $5, they are free on Thursdays. Reservations are required.
As a bonus, you should also plan on viewing the bat colony on Waugh Drive. Every evening, 250,000 bats emerge from the cave shortly after dusk. On the first and third Friday of each month, a volunteer bat expert will lead a Bat Chat to answer questions and share information.
