At the Houston Zoo, visitors see animals from around the world while learning how to take better care of the natural environment.
It’s home to more than six thousand animals, and over 2.55 million people walk through the gates each year, making it the second most visited zoo in the United States.
The zoo strives to provide engaging animal experiences, and exhibits include:
Explore the wonders of Africa without needing a passport. The path meanders through a village trading outpost complete with round huts and a fire pit before leading visitors into the forest where drums are heard in the distance. Animals seen along the way include chimpanzees, gorillas, and giraffes.
Step into the sea lion exhibit to watch as Jonah, Rookie, Cali, and their friends charm the crowd with their playful antics. Max, the zoo’s newest sea lion, will also join the fun. He was born to Cali on June 26, 2017.
McNair Asian Elephant Habitat
Recently renovated, this habitat is where the zoo’s eight elephants spend their days roaming and splashing in their new 160,000-gallon pool. Just like in the wild, the adult male and female elephants live separately.
Wortham World of Primates
The Wortham World of Primates exhibit is home to some of the most fascinating and intelligent creatures. In a natural setting, the winding boardwalk offers views of howler monkeys, lemurs, orangutans, and more as they play with toys and eat treats provided by the zookeepers.
