Strawberries are the stars of the show during the three days of the Pasadena Strawberry Festival. It’s well worth the 45 minute drive east from Lincoln Galleria to the Pasadena Fairgrounds to enjoy the fun and festivities happening May 18-20.
History of the Festival
After the Great Galveston Hurricane in 1900, Clara Barton and the Red Cross helped reinvigorate the devastated Pasadena area by planting strawberries. The climate and sandy soil proved to be advantageous to the crop. So Pasadena quickly became known as the Strawberry Capital of the South.
Though those original strawberry fields are gone now, the Pasadena Strawberry Festival continues to preserve the history of the city. Additionally, it contributes to the community by donating money raised by the event to provide local students with college scholarships.
The World’s Largest Strawberry Shortcake
Weighing in at over 20,000 pounds, one of the biggest event highlights is a recreation of the record-breaking strawberry shortcake that was first created at the festival in 2014. This Guinness Book of World Records winner contains more than 2,000 square feet of strawberries and whipped cream and is presented and served up during the event’s opening ceremony on Friday evening.
Mud Volleyball Tournament
On Saturday, 128 teams play dirty as they compete for the coveted number one spot in mud volleyball. Played in full-sized volleyball courts dug down three feet and filled with water, teams sweat it out in the mud pits from morning to night as they battle through the brackets to become champions.
Over 70 teams will also be vying for winning titles in the BBQ Cook-Off. Participants compete to make the tastiest brisket, pork spare ribs, fajitas, beans, margaritas and naturally, strawberry desserts! Judging takes place Friday and Saturday with awards presented on Sunday.
Fun for Kids
The festival’s Kids’ Adventure Zone is filled with non-stop fun for the younger crowd. Some activities for the youngsters include pony rides, face painting, inflatables, and a strawberry eating contests. Jugglers, balloon artists, a petting zoo, free crafts and plenty more kid-friendly fun is available all during the festival in both indoor and outdoor areas.
A full carnival midway stocked with games, rides and carnival food will open for a sneak peek during a Thursday night preview on May 17th. Following the sneak peek, the midway will be open during all festival hours for endless fun and entertainment.
Throughout the festival weekend, attendees can also enjoy:
- Live music
- Stunt shows
- Magic acts
- A music competition
- Craft booths

- Along with plenty of strawberry treats, of course!
There’s something for everyone to enjoy at the Pasadena Strawberry Festival.
